Bats are considered a bad omen almost everywhere. Feared, rejected, chased out the moment they're seen. I grew up hearing the same warning myself: disobey, and you'll end up hanging upside down like one. But nearly 500 plant species can't survive without them. Somewhere between the fear we've handed this creature and what it actually does in the dark, I found a question I couldn't put down, one that has less to do with bats than with how we treat anyone we've already decided is shameful...

Ray Kurzweil, Google's Director of Engineering, predicts that by 2029 AI will reach human-level intelligence. By 2045, he says, we hit the Singularity. That phrase stopped me, because I had heard that promise before, not from a scientist, but from a snake in a garden.
