1So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.2Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.3Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.4Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.9Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.10For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.11Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?12And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.13Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.14For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.15I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.16There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Ecclesiastes Chapter 4 Study Notes

Solomon opens this chapter with one of the most searching observations in all of wisdom literature. He turns his gaze upon the oppressed of the earth and what he sees breaks through his philosophical composure. The tears of the suffering, the crushing weight of power wielded without mercy, and the aching absence of any comforter, these realities bring him to a startling conclusion. He declares the dead more fortunate than the living, and those never born more fortunate still.

This is not the counsel of despair so much as it is the honest reckoning of a man stripped of illusion. Matthew Henry observes that Solomon is not promoting suicide or nihilism but rather exposing the full weight of sin's consequences upon human society. When justice is absent and cruelty goes unchecked, life under such conditions loses its savour. The Preacher is doing what the prophets would later do, bearing witness to suffering without looking away.

For the Adventist reader, this is a world still groaning under the curse of Genesis 3, a world where the Great Controversy plays out not only in heavenly realms but in the grinding injustice of every oppressive system. Ellen White reminded believers that Christ sees every tear that falls in secret and that heaven is not indifferent to the cries of the downtrodden, a truth Solomon longed for but could only partially perceive.

The chapter then shifts from oppression to ambition. Solomon considers the driven, restless worker whose every achievement is shadowed by the envy of his neighbours, and he names this too as vanity. This is a perceptive diagnosis of competitive human society. Hard work becomes a kind of trap when it is animated not by love or calling but by the need to outdo and to be seen.

Adam Clarke notes that the Hebrew behind “every right work” suggests skill and excellence, meaning even genuinely fine achievement can become a snare if it feeds rivalry rather than community. Yet Solomon does not swing to the opposite extreme and endorse laziness. Verse 5 issues a sharp warning against the fool who folds his hands and consumes himself in idleness, a vivid image of self-destruction through neglect. The balance he strikes in verse 6 is quietly profound: a single handful gained in peace surpasses two handfuls wrested from life through frantic, anxious striving.

This is not a call to mediocrity but to the wisdom of contentment, a theme the New Testament will later carry forward in Paul's counsel that godliness with contentment is great gain.

Solomon then pauses over the portrait of the solitary miser, one of the most poignant sketches in the chapter. This unnamed figure toils endlessly, possesses neither child nor brother, accumulates without limit, and never pauses to ask the most important question of all: for whom am I working? Barnes notes the pathos here is intentional. The man is not wicked in an obvious way; he is simply consumed.

His eye is never satisfied, a phrase that echoes the insatiable nature of covetousness that appears elsewhere in Scripture. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown connects this figure to the broader Preacher's argument that wealth pursued as an end in itself is a kind of self-imposed poverty of the soul. This lonely accumulator has traded relationships, rest, and meaning for a pile of riches he cannot enjoy and will leave to no one he loves. It stands as a sobering mirror for any age in which productivity and wealth acquisition are treated as the highest human virtues. The question he never asks, for whom do I labour, is precisely the question Christ invites every person to bring to their life's work.

Commentary Insights

From this lonely figure, Solomon moves naturally into one of the most celebrated passages in the book, his meditation on companionship and community in verses 9 through 12. Two are better than one, not because togetherness is a sentimental comfort but because it is practically wise and spiritually necessary. The three examples Solomon offers are beautifully concrete: two workers produce a better return, two travellers can help each other when one stumbles, two people sharing a sleeping place provide warmth against the cold night. Then comes the crowning image of the threefold cord.

Most commentators, including Matthew Henry, have seen this third strand as representing God himself, the divine presence that turns human companionship into something unbreakable. Adventist thought has always treasured the communal nature of the church, understanding that Christian fellowship is not merely a social arrangement but a spiritual bulwark. Ellen White wrote extensively about the danger of self-sufficient isolation and the strength that flows from believers supporting and bearing one another up. These verses in Ecclesiastes lay the wisdom foundation for what the New Testament will build upon in its vision of the body of Christ, each member essential, none complete alone.

Reflection & Application

The chapter closes with a brief but telling reflection on political fortune and the fickleness of popular favour. Solomon compares the wise young man who rises from poverty or imprisonment to power with the old and stubborn king who will no longer receive counsel. The imagery may carry autobiographical weight since Solomon himself had watched his father David navigate a kingdom full of rivals and reversals. The point, however, is broader.

No matter how brilliantly a leader begins, if he closes himself to wisdom and correction, his influence will not endure. The crowds that celebrate him are endless and shifting, each generation forgetting the last.
