1Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;2Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.3For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.4For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.5And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;6But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.7Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,8Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:9When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.10Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.11So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)12Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.13But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.14For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;15While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.16For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.17But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?18And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?19So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

Historical Background

Hebrews chapter three opens with one of the most direct and searching invitations in the New Testament. The writer, addressing his readers as “holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling,” urges them to fix their eyes deliberately and thoughtfully on Christ Jesus, described here with two extraordinary titles: Apostle and High Priest. The word “consider” in the original Greek is katanoeo, meaning to observe carefully, to direct the mind with full attention toward something. This is not a casual glance but a sustained, concentrated focus.

The dual title is significant. As Apostle, Christ is the one sent from God to humanity, the divine messenger who carries heaven's commission. As High Priest, He is the one who represents humanity before God. No other figure in religious history holds both offices simultaneously, and the writer wants his readers, many of whom were Jewish Christians tempted to drift back toward Judaism and its Mosaic structures, to understand that everything they once found meaningful in Moses and the Levitical priesthood now finds its completion and surpassing fulfilment in Jesus alone.

The comparison between Christ and Moses occupies the first six verses, and it is handled with both reverence and theological precision. The writer is careful not to disparage Moses, who was genuinely honoured throughout Jewish tradition as the greatest of prophets and the mediator of the covenant at Sinai. is quoted directly: Moses was faithful in all God's house. That faithfulness was real and praiseworthy.

But there is a categorical difference between Christ and Moses that no amount of Moses' greatness can bridge. Moses was faithful as a servant within the household, while Christ is faithful as a Son over the household. More than that, the one who builds a house is greater than the house itself, and since God built all things, the argument subtly identifies Christ with the divine builder rather than with the structure He governs. Adam Clarke observes that the contrast is not merely of degree but of kind: a servant, however faithful, operates under authority and within structures he did not create, while a son participates in the very nature and ownership of the house.

Moses pointed forward; his entire ministry was, as verse five says, “a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after.” He was a signpost. Christ is the destination the signpost points toward.

Core Teaching

Verse six introduces a corporate and conditional dimension that carries considerable weight: “whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.” This is not a statement of uncertainty about salvation itself but a solemn reminder that genuine belonging to God's household is demonstrated through persevering faith. The “if” here echoes throughout the rest of the chapter. The writer then turns to Psalm 95, a text the original readers would have known well, and he presses its urgent warning into the present moment.

“Today, if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” The word “today” is emphatic. The writer uses it repeatedly across chapters three and four because he wants to shatter any comfortable assumption that there will always be more time. The generation that wandered forty years in the wilderness had heard God's voice through Moses, had witnessed miracle after miracle, had eaten manna and drunk from the rock, and yet they hardened their hearts in unbelief at the moment of decision.

Their carcasses fell in the wilderness, and they never entered the rest God had promised. The Canaan they never reached was both a physical land and a spiritual reality, and the failure to enter it was rooted not in military inability but in the corruption of unbelief.

Commentary Insights

Ellen White writes in Patriarchs and Prophets that the history of Israel in the wilderness is not merely a record of past failures but a mirror held up to every generation, warning that privileges and knowledge of God's will do not guarantee faithfulness unless the heart is yielded daily to His voice. The tragedy of the wilderness generation was not ignorance; they had seen God's works for forty years. The tragedy was a settled disposition of the heart that persistently chose its own way over God's. Verse ten is devastating in its simplicity: “They do alway err in their heart, and they have not known my ways.”

The problem was not intellectual but volitional, not a lack of evidence but a refusal to surrender. Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown note that the word “grieved” in verse ten translates the Greek prospochthizo, carrying a sense of disgust and weariness combined with deep sorrow. God is not cold or indifferent to human stubbornness; He is genuinely and deeply grieved by it.

Reflection & Application

The practical application the writer draws is both communal and urgent. He does not simply warn individuals to watch their own hearts, though that is certainly included. He calls believers to exhort one another daily, recognising that sin works through deception and that isolation makes Christians more vulnerable to the slow hardening that comes through repeated compromise. The community of faith is presented here as a safeguard, a network of mutual accountability and encouragement.

Barnes notes that the very nature of sin's deceitfulness lies in its gradual quality; hearts do not usually harden in a single dramatic moment but through accumulated small choices that slowly close the ear to God's voice. The three rhetorical questions in verses sixteen through eighteen drive the lesson home with prosecutorial force. Who provoked God? Those who heard and still rebelled. With whom was He grieved forty years? Those who sinned.
