1At that time Merodach–baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had been sick, and was recovered.2And Hezekiah was glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.3Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, even from Babylon.4Then said he, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.5Then said Isaiah to Hezekiah, Hear the word of the Lord of hosts:6Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord.7And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.8Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, Good is the word of the Lord which thou hast spoken. Isaiah Chapter 39 Study Notes

This brief but pivotal chapter forms the hinge between two great sections of Isaiah's prophecy. What begins as a story of diplomatic congratulation ends as a solemn turning point in Judah's history, and the contrast between Hezekiah's earlier humility before God and his pride before the Babylonian envoys is deeply instructive. Historically, Merodach-Baladan was a Chaldean chieftain who twice seized the throne of Babylon, around 721 BC and briefly again around 703 BC. His embassy to Hezekiah was not simply a gesture of goodwill toward a recovering king.

It was almost certainly a political calculation, seeking an alliance against the overwhelming power of Assyria, the common threat facing both nations. Babylon at this stage was still a secondary power, not yet the empire it would become, but Merodach-Baladan was a shrewd operator who understood the value of cultivating relationships with a wealthy and strategically positioned kingdom like Judah.

Hezekiah's response to the envoys reveals a subtle but serious failure of the heart. After the extraordinary experiences of chapters 37 and 38, including miraculous deliverance from Sennacherib's armies and a personal healing from fatal illness, one might expect the king to respond to these foreign visitors with testimony and witness to the living God. Instead, he opened every treasury, every storehouse, every armoury, and showed them all that he possessed. The Hebrew underlying the word “glad” in verse 1 suggests a kind of excited pleasure, almost relief at being acknowledged and courted by a rising power.

Matthew Henry observes that Hezekiah's heart was lifted up by this visit in a way it had not been during the crisis of Assyrian invasion, and this reveals how prosperity and flattery can be more spiritually dangerous than affliction. Adam Clarke notes that what Hezekiah displayed to these ambassadors was precisely the wealth that God had helped him accumulate, and to show it off without acknowledging the Giver was a form of practical ingratitude dressed up as hospitality.

Isaiah's questioning in verses 3 and 4 is gentle but searching. The prophet asks where these men came from and what they had seen, not because he lacked knowledge, but because he was drawing Hezekiah toward honest self-examination. This is the pastoral method of a faithful prophet, leading the king to voice his own actions before pronouncing judgment upon them. Hezekiah's reply carries no apparent embarrassment.

He had seen nothing wrong with what he had done, which may itself be the deepest warning in the passage. Barnes' Notes points out that this mirrors the approach of Nathan with David, where the confrontation is shaped to move from disclosure to accountability. The Jamieson-Fausset-Brown commentary observes that by revealing his treasures to Babylon, Hezekiah was in effect showing future conquerors exactly what was worth taking, an act of proud folly dressed in the garments of diplomacy.

Commentary Insights

The prophetic word that follows in verses 6 and 7 is among the most sobering in all of Isaiah. Everything shown to these envoys would one day be carried to Babylon, and sons descended from Hezekiah would serve as eunuchs in the palace of Babylon's king. This is not merely a political forecast but a moral consequence. What was displayed in pride would be carried away in shame.

The word of the Lord here announces not a random calamity but a judgment shaped precisely by the sin that preceded it. Remarkably, this prophecy looks more than a century into the future, anticipating the Babylonian captivity of 605 to 586 BC with striking specificity. Daniel and his companions, young men of royal lineage taken to serve in Nebuchadnezzar's palace, may well represent the fulfilment of the phrase “thy sons that shall issue from thee.” Ellen White in Prophets and Kings draws this very connection, noting that those noble young men carried into Babylon were paying a price rooted in part in Hezekiah's moment of vainglory before these same Babylonian representatives.

Hezekiah's reply in verse 8 has troubled commentators across the centuries. “Good is the word of the Lord which thou hast spoken,” he says, and then quietly adds that there will be peace and truth in his own days. Some have read this as genuine piety and resignation to the divine will, and there is certainly a measure of that present. Hezekiah does not argue with the judgment or seek to negotiate it away.

However, the second part of his response reveals something more troubling, a quiet relief that the disaster will fall on his children rather than himself. Matthew Henry gently but honestly calls this out as falling short of the spirit of a true penitent, who would grieve over coming judgment even when personally exempted from it. The great contrast in this chapter is between the humility Hezekiah showed in prayer during sickness and siege, face to the wall, weeping before God, and the quiet self-satisfaction he shows here. Both responses involve accepting God's word, but one comes from a broken spirit and the other from a comfortable heart.

Reflection & Application

Taken together, chapter 39 prepares the reader for the dramatic shift that begins in chapter 40, where the voice of comfort speaks into a future exile already foreshadowed here.
