Historical Background

Psalm 100 stands as one of the most beloved and complete expressions of corporate worship in the entire Psalter. Designated in its heading as “A Psalm of Praise” or literally a psalm for the todah, the Hebrew thank offering, it was likely used in the context of Israel's temple liturgy when worshippers brought their sacrifices of thanksgiving to Jerusalem. The todah offering described in Leviticus 7 was accompanied by singing and communal celebration, and this psalm functioned as a kind of processional hymn, guiding the congregation through the gates and into the courts of God's house. What is remarkable is that the psalm addresses not merely Israel but “all ye lands,” anticipating a universal worship that the prophets consistently connected to the coming Messianic age when all nations would stream to Zion and acknowledge the God of Israel as the one true God.

The opening two verses carry an almost breathless energy. The command to “make a joyful noise” uses the Hebrew word rua, which describes the kind of shout that accompanied military victory or the joyful cry of a crowd overwhelmed with good news. Matthew Henry notes that the call here is not for quiet, private devotion alone but for a demonstrative, whole-hearted public expression of praise. The further command to “serve the Lord with gladness” is profoundly important, because it connects service and joy as inseparable realities.

Adam Clarke observed that the Hebrew word for serve here, abad, is the same word used for the service of a bondslave, yet the character of that service is radically transformed by gladness. True worship is not reluctant obligation but joyful surrender. Ellen White echoes this beautifully in The Ministry of Healing when she writes that the service of God is not a burden but a delight, and that those who truly know Him find His service to be their highest freedom.

Verse 3 carries the theological heart of the psalm. “Know ye that the Lord he is God” is a declaration not merely of theological proposition but of lived, experiential knowledge. The Hebrew word yada suggests intimate, relational knowing rather than abstract intellectual assent. The phrase “it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves” addresses a tendency that runs through every culture and every age: the human inclination to believe that we are self-made, self-sufficient, and self-defining.

Barnes' Notes draws attention to the alternative reading found in many manuscripts, “and we are his,” which shifts the emphasis slightly but complements the same truth. We did not choose our own existence; we belong to the One who formed us. The imagery of sheep and shepherd that closes the verse is tender and carries enormous weight across Scripture, from the twenty-third Psalm through Ezekiel 34 and into the New Testament where Jesus declares Himself to be the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep. In this single verse the psalm grounds all worship in the doctrines of creation and redemption.

Commentary Insights

Verse 4 describes the posture and pathway of worship. The gates and courts referred to here are the literal architectural spaces of Solomon's temple, where the outer courts received the general congregation of Israel and the gates marked the transition from the world outside into sacred space. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown notes that entering with thanksgiving and praise was not merely ceremonial but deeply instructive, teaching worshippers that one does not approach God carelessly or with a distracted mind, but with a heart already tuned to gratitude. In the Adventist understanding, this verse has powerful application to corporate Sabbath worship, where the act of gathering and entering the house of God is itself an act of faith and surrender.

Ellen White wrote in Testimonies for the Church that we should not enter God's house with worldly conversation and a wandering heart but should come with reverence and with praise already filling our minds before the service begins.

Reflection & Application

The final verse provides the doctrinal foundation for everything the psalm has commanded. “The Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” These three qualities, goodness, mercy expressed in the Hebrew word hesed meaning covenant lovingkindness, and truth or faithfulness, are among the most frequently repeated descriptions of God across the Old Testament. They appear together in Exodus 34 when God reveals His name to Moses on Sinai, and they form the bedrock of Israel's covenant relationship with Him.

The Great Controversy theme finds a quiet but powerful expression here: in a universe where God's character has been questioned and His goodness slandered, this psalm calls all the earth to lift its voice in testimony that He is good, that His love never exhausts itself, and that His word never fails. This is not sentimental optimism but a declaration forged through Israel's long history of wilderness wanderings, exile, and restoration. The God who has been faithful through every generation is the same God who is worthy of our worship today, and the church that sings this psalm joins a choir stretching from ancient Jerusalem to the courts of heaven itself.
