Historical Background

Psalm 133 is one of the fifteen Songs of Ascents, a collection of psalms sung by Jewish pilgrims as they made their way up to Jerusalem for the three great annual festivals: Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. The journey itself was communal, with families and neighbours walking together from towns and villages across Israel, and so the theme of unity would have resonated deeply with every foot-weary pilgrim who arrived at the holy city to find themselves surrounded by thousands of fellow worshippers. Attributed to David, this brief psalm may have been written during his reign when the twelve tribes were first brought together under one king, ending generations of tribal tension and rivalry. The very act of pilgrims from the northern and southern regions worshipping side by side gave this psalm a living illustration every time it was sung on the roads to Zion.

The psalm opens with a spontaneous cry of delight, as though the psalmist has just witnessed something beautiful and cannot contain his admiration. The Hebrew word translated “behold” calls the reader to stop and take notice, to genuinely observe what is before them rather than pass it by without reflection. The word for “unity” here, yachad, carries a sense of oneness that is more than mere agreement or tolerance. It describes a deep, harmonious togetherness in which individual differences are not erased but are woven into something greater.

Matthew Henry observed that the word “brethren” reminds us that unity is most natural among those who share a common origin and a common Father, and that discord among brethren is therefore not only unpleasant but deeply unnatural. The psalm wastes no time in explaining why unity is good; it simply invites us to behold it, trusting that the sight itself will be convincing.

Core Teaching

The first image used to describe this unity is the anointing oil poured upon Aaron at his consecration as High Priest, described in Leviticus 8. The oil, a specially compounded blend of myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, cassia, and olive oil, was poured lavishly upon Aaron's head and ran down through his beard and onto the collar of his priestly garments. The image is one of abundance, of blessing that cannot be contained but overflows beyond its original point of application to cover everything beneath it. Adam Clarke noted that this was no small or careful application but a generous outpouring, symbolising the fullness of the Holy Spirit's blessing upon the priestly office.

The connection to Christ is unmistakable from an Adventist and Christ-centred perspective. Jesus is the great High Priest, and the anointing that rests upon Him flows outward to His people. Wherever genuine Christian unity exists, it is a sign that the anointing of the Spirit has descended upon the community, just as the oil descended from Aaron's head to encompass his whole person.

Commentary Insights

The second image moves from the warmth of the sanctuary to the freshness of the natural world. Hermon is the great snow-capped mountain in the far north of Israel, rising to nearly three thousand metres and well known for the heavy dew it produced as warm air met its cold slopes. The resulting moisture was remarkable and life-giving in a region where summer heat could be brutal and water precious. For this dew to be imagined as falling upon the mountains of Zion in Jerusalem was a striking picture, since Zion is far to the south and receives no literal dew from Hermon.

The psalmist is using poetic licence to describe something miraculous and extraordinary, the kind of refreshing, life-sustaining blessing that could only come from God Himself. Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown suggested that the comparison emphasises that unity among God's people produces a freshness and vitality in spiritual life that is as nourishing to the soul as dew is to the parched ground in a dry land.

Reflection & Application

The concluding clause brings the whole poem to its theological summit. It is not simply that unity feels pleasant or produces a positive atmosphere; it is that God has attached His blessing to it. The phrase “there the Lord commanded the blessing” uses the Hebrew tsivvah, suggesting a decisive, sovereign act of divine will. God does not merely permit or allow blessing to rest where unity dwells; He commands it, establishes it, ordains it as the very environment in which His grace operates most freely.

The ultimate expression of that blessing is “life for evermore,” pointing beyond the temporal blessings of the covenant community to the eternal life that is the gift of Christ. Ellen White wrote in The Acts of the Apostles that when believers are united in purpose and love, they present to the world the most powerful evidence of the truth of the gospel, and that the prayer of Christ in John 17 for His people to be one as He and the Father are one anticipates exactly the kind of unity this psalm celebrates. In three short verses, Psalm 133 teaches us that unity among God's people is not a human achievement but a divine gift, not merely a pleasant social quality but the very atmosphere in which eternal life is cultivated and the glory of God is made visible to the world.
