Historical Background

Psalm 122 is one of the Songs of Ascent, a collection of fifteen psalms (120 through 134) that pilgrims sang as they made their way up to Jerusalem for the three great annual feasts commanded in the Law of Moses: Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. The very word “ascent” carries geographic weight, because Jerusalem sits on a hill and all roads to it literally rise upward. Attributed to David, this psalm may well have been composed in anticipation of the ark of the covenant being brought to Jerusalem, or as a celebration of the holy city itself as the center of worship and national life. For Jewish pilgrims traveling from Galilee, Samaria, or even distant lands, the journey to Jerusalem was both physically demanding and spiritually charged.

To arrive at the city gates meant to arrive at the place where heaven and earth were understood to meet, where the presence of God dwelt among His people in a unique and tangible way.

The psalm opens with a burst of remembered joy. “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.” This is not a polite religious sentiment but a cry of genuine delight. Matthew Henry observes that the psalmist's gladness was not stirred by the invitation to see the city's architecture or to enjoy fellowship with friends, but specifically by the prospect of going to the house of the Lord.

The order matters deeply here. It is the house of God that makes Jerusalem worth the journey. The second verse, where the psalmist imagines the moment of arrival, “Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem,” captures that threshold experience all worshippers know, the holy anticipation of crossing from the ordinary into the sacred. Adam Clarke notes that the Hebrew construction suggests the psalmist is reliving this gladness as he speaks, almost as though the joy of a past pilgrimage has never quite left him.

Verses three through five describe Jerusalem in ways that go far beyond scenic appreciation. The phrase “builded as a city that is compact together” points to the extraordinary density and unity of Jerusalem, a city built close and tight upon its rocky ridges. Barnes' Notes suggests this compactness was not merely architectural but symbolic, representing the unity of the people who gathered there. The tribes came not as strangers to a foreign city but as the tribes of the Lord, drawn to “the testimony of Israel,” which refers to the ark and the Law housed in the sanctuary.

This was the gathering that gave Israel its identity as a covenant people. Verse five adds a crucial dimension by noting that Jerusalem was also the seat of justice, where the thrones of the house of David were established. The city was at once the center of worship, the center of national unity, and the center of governance. In the ancient world these three functions were rarely separated, and for Israel they were held together in one sacred geography under the kingship of God expressed through the Davidic line.

Commentary Insights

The heart of the psalm's practical teaching arrives in verse six with one of the most memorable commands in all of Scripture: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.” The Hebrew word for peace here is shalom, which carries far more than an absence of conflict. Shalom means wholeness, well-being, completeness, the full flourishing of life under God's blessing. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown points out that the promise attached to this command, “they shall prosper that love thee,” uses a Hebrew word meaning to be at rest or to live securely.

The love of Jerusalem spoken of here is not nationalist sentiment but spiritual devotion, a love for the place where God dwells and His purposes are carried forward. Ellen White, writing in Patriarchs and Prophets, frequently emphasized that the prosperity of God's people was inseparably linked to their relationship with His appointed means of grace and His dwelling among them. To love the place of God's presence was to align oneself with the purposes of God.

Reflection & Application

The closing verses draw the circle of prayer outward from personal devotion to communal responsibility. The psalmist prays for peace within the walls and prosperity within the palaces, but his motivation is explicitly stated: for the sake of his brethren and companions, and because of the house of the Lord. This is not self-interested prayer but intercessory prayer rooted in love for community and reverence for God. The Adventist understanding of this psalm is enriched by seeing Jerusalem as a type of the heavenly city toward which all of God's people journey.

Just as the pilgrim's heart was lifted at the mention of earthly Jerusalem, the heart of the believer today should be stirred at the thought of the New Jerusalem, the city whose builder and maker is God. The gladness of verse one finds its ultimate fulfillment not on the roads of ancient Judea but in the promise of Revelation 21, where God's people at last stand within those eternal gates, and the shalom of God is complete and unending.
