Historical Background

Psalm 64 is a psalm of David, carrying a heading that connects it to a time of personal danger, most likely composed during the period when David was being hunted by enemies who used words as weapons just as readily as they used swords. The historical world of ancient Israel was one in which political intrigue, court conspiracy, and whispered slander could destroy a person as surely as any battle wound. Scholars such as Adam Clarke and Matthew Henry both note that this psalm fits naturally within the era of Absalom's rebellion or the persistent scheming of Saul's loyalists, both periods when David found himself surrounded by those who plotted in secret and spoke in poisoned whispers. The Hebrew word translated “secret counsel” in verse two, sod, carries the sense of a conspiratorial gathering, a closed circle of plotters who believe their schemes are invisible to God and man alike. This is not merely a private grievance being aired, but a deeply theological reflection on the nature of hidden evil and the certainty of divine justice.

The opening verses of the psalm establish the posture of the believer under threat. David does not respond to conspiracy with counter-conspiracy, nor does he reach for political leverage. He prays. His cry to God in verse one, “Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer,” is the instinctive movement of a soul trained in dependence on heaven.

Barnes' Notes observes that the phrase “preserve my life from fear of the enemy” can be understood not only as preservation from the enemy's actions but from the very dread that enemies can generate in the heart. Fear itself becomes a kind of enemy, and David understands that the inner life must be guarded alongside the outer. Verses three through six then shift into a detailed portrait of the wicked, and it is a striking one. Their tongues are sharpened like swords, their words described as arrows shot from ambush at the innocent.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown notes the vivid military imagery here, where verbal attack is treated with the full seriousness of armed assault. The plotters “commune of laying snares privily” and ask among themselves, “Who shall see them?” This question, dripping with arrogance, reveals the fundamental error of all who dismiss divine observation.

Core Teaching

The turning point of the psalm arrives with the single, powerful word “But” at the beginning of verse seven. The wicked have been shooting their arrows in secret, confident that no eye is watching. Then God shoots. The symmetry is unmistakable and intentional.

The very weapon they used against the innocent, the sudden arrow from an unseen source, becomes the instrument of their own judgment. Matthew Henry observes that there is a divine law of correspondence running through history, where the instruments of cruelty frequently become the instruments of punishment. Ellen White touches on this theme in Patriarchs and Prophets, where she reflects on how the plots of the wicked often recoil upon the plotters themselves, not merely by poetic coincidence, but because God is actively present in history, turning human schemes back upon their authors. Verse eight captures this precisely: “they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves,” meaning their slanders, schemes, and proud speeches become the evidence and the mechanism of their own undoing.

Commentary Insights

The closing verses of the psalm draw the circle outward from David's personal crisis to a universal declaration. When God acts in visible judgment, the watching world takes note. “All men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing,” says verse nine. This is not simply relief from a threatened saint, but a moment of theological instruction for all who observe it.

The Great Controversy theme resounds here with real clarity. The controversy between good and evil is not fought in darkness forever. There come moments of disclosure, moments when God's character is vindicated before the watching universe, when the hidden workings of evil are exposed and the faithfulness of those who trusted in God is confirmed. The Adventist understanding of the judgment carries this very weight, that the entirety of the cosmic conflict will finally be made transparent, and every observer, human and angelic, will see clearly.

Reflection & Application

The psalm closes on a note of confident joy in verse ten, and this ending is not an afterthought but the theological goal of everything that preceded it. “The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.” The verb “glory” here, from the Hebrew halal, is the root of hallelujah, a word of exultant praise. The journey from trembling petition in verse one to radiant praise in verse ten traces the arc of faith that moves through danger into deliverance.

Christ himself walked this arc in its fullest and deepest form. He was the one shot at by bitter words, surrounded by secret counsel, betrayed and abandoned, yet vindicated by the Father on the morning of resurrection. Every believer who prays through this psalm in the darkness of their own trial stands in the company of David, and beyond David, in the company of Christ himself, trusting that the God who hears prayer will act, and that joy awaits on the other side of the storm.
