Historical Background

Psalm 43 is brief but carries enormous spiritual weight, and it is almost certainly a continuation of Psalm 42. The two psalms share the same distinctive refrain, the same vocabulary of soul-anguish and divine longing, and the same movement between lament and hard-won hope. Most scholars across traditions, including Matthew Henry and Adam Clarke, believe they were originally a single composition that became separated in the transmission of the Psalter. The historical setting most likely reflects the experience of a Levite or the sons of Korah during a period of exile or forced displacement, possibly during the rebellion of Absalom or during the Babylonian captivity.

Either way, the poet is cut off from the temple, surrounded by enemies who mock his faith, and wrestling honestly with what feels like divine abandonment. That raw honesty is not a failure of faith but is in fact the very language of prayer that Scripture endorses throughout.

The psalm opens with a bold legal appeal. The Hebrew word translated “judge me” carries the sense of vindicating or championing a cause, not merely rendering a verdict. The psalmist is asking God to step into the courtroom of human affairs and take his side against those described as an ungodly nation and a deceitful and unjust man. This may refer to a specific adversary, perhaps a false accuser or a hostile foreign power, but it speaks universally to every believer who has felt surrounded by forces that distort truth and use power unjustly.

Barnes notes that the psalmist does not appeal to his own righteousness but to the character of God as the only reliable judge. Verse 2 then turns inward with a question that many believers instinctively feel but rarely voice so plainly: why does God seem distant while suffering continues? The phrase “why go I mourning” paints a picture of unrelieved grief, and yet even that grief is addressed to God, which itself is an act of faith. Ellen White observed in Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing that those who mourn, who feel the deep ache of a world out of harmony with God, are precisely the ones who are open to divine comfort.

Verse 3 is the theological heart of the psalm and one of the most beautiful prayer requests in all of Scripture. “Send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me.” Light and truth here are almost personified as divine guides, heavenly escorts capable of navigating the psalmist back to the place of worship. In Hebrew thought, the holy hill and the tabernacles are not merely physical locations but the place where heaven and earth meet, where the presence of God is most tangibly experienced.

The psalmist is not merely asking for directions; he is asking for revelation and faithfulness, two qualities only God can supply. Adam Clarke connects this verse to the pillar of fire and cloud that led Israel through the wilderness, suggesting that the psalmist is appealing to that same covenant-guiding presence to lead him through his own wilderness of suffering. From a Christ-centred reading, this verse anticipates Jesus who declared himself the light of the world and the truth, the one who personally leads his people back into the Father's presence.

Commentary Insights

Verse 4 pictures the arrival, the moment when the guidance of light and truth has done its work. “Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy.” The Hebrew phrase translated “my exceeding joy” literally means the gladness of my joy, a superlative of delight. This is not the guarded happiness of someone who has learned not to hope too much; this is extravagant, overflowing gladness rooted entirely in God himself.

Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note the progression here: the altar is not the destination but the pathway to God, and it is God himself who is the exceeding joy. Worship, praise on the harp, the public declaration of gratitude, these are the natural overflow of a soul that has been led back to its source. This anticipates the worship of the redeemed described throughout Revelation, where every recovered soul praises the God who never truly let them go.

Reflection & Application

The closing verse repeats the refrain from Psalm 42, but repetition in Scripture is rarely mere formula. It is the psalmist speaking to himself, practicing what modern psychology might call self-talk but what Scripture would call preaching the gospel to one's own soul. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? hope in God.”

The Adventist understanding of the human person sees the soul not as something separate from the body but as the whole living person, and that whole person is here summoned to reason against despair. The phrase “the health of my countenance” can also be rendered the salvation of my face, meaning the restoration of dignity, peace, and a life that reflects divine joy outwardly. Ellen White in Steps to Christ reminds us that genuine praise is among the most powerful weapons against discouragement, not because it denies difficulty, but because it redirects the gaze from the pit to the throne. Psalm 43 closes not with resolution of every problem but with a resolved will, a deliberate choice to anchor hope in the God who is light, truth, and exceeding joy.
